Octoberfest & Thanksgiving Part 2

Went to Calgary over the week-end again. I sure have been spending an awful lot of time there. I just normally don't get to see my sister that often so I have to take advantage of it while I can.

Anyways the reason for my visit was my Dad and Mary were in town and we did a second thanksgiving. The preparations for this dinner were a lot more time consuming than last week-end, but then we had 7 dinner guest and a lot more food.

I arrived on Friday in time for the big Octoberfest party at Coyotes. We met at Candice's place for a few drinks and then walked over to the bar. We were greeted at the door by a television crew that wanted to put us on TV, but it was so busy they just ended up waving us in. Upon entering we were each given a green hat with feather, a drink ticket, and a bratwurst ticket. We entered the bar to find the most unlikely music for an Octoberfest party. A live band called "Kiss of Death" playing some pretty hardcore death metal. Thankfully when the band went on break the DJ played 80's and polka music which fit the occasion much better.

During the band's breaks they had a lot of competitions for free beer, and of course, our little posse won every single contest. The beer there was pricey so it was well worth entering.

First up was the ice contest. They paired up random guys and girls and the girl had to take an ice cube and pass it up the guys pant leg, down the other leg, and back. Andrea won by jamming her arms up and down the pant legs to speed up the ice passing process as her husband sat by laughing his butt off. She and the guy each won two beers.

The next event wasn't so much a contest. They got a group of us on stage (mostly people from our group) and gave us each a cow bell. Then whenever the conductor pointed to one of us we had to ring the bell and thus playing a few songs. I think we each got a beer for participating.

Then came the sausage eating contest. The guys were up first and Andrea's friend Ken won hands down and came away with two beers. Then was the ladies turn. It was a solo event but Andrea and I entered together. We held the two sausages together and each ate from one end, essentially mashing the sausages between our faces. It was soooo disgustingly messy, we had sausage grease all over our faces and smeared down our shirts. It was sick!! As we were racing to finish we could see these guys standing in the front row staring dumbfounded at us. Needless to say we of course won, no contest. We each won two beers which by now was really needed.

We spent the rest of the night dancing on whatever surfaces were available, the stage, the chairs, the speakers, some barrels. There was a photographer there that Andrea knew and now somewhere out there are some pretty crazy shots of us. The night ended with a whole lot of shooters, most of them body shots....mmm I'll leave it at that.

Saturday morning was painful to say the least. All of us were dreadfully hungover. We had to start preparations for our dinner the next day though. We made 4 desserts. A pumpkin pie, a lemon pie, some nutchos (chocolate, peanuts, and potato chips all melted together) and a skor/chocolate trifle. We also did all the veggie chopping etc. so the next day would be easy. Then we went out and did a little Halloween costume shopping. I'm not sure if I'm going down there for Halloween yet or not, but we had fun wandering around Value Village and the costume shop laughing at all the bizarre costumes.

Sunday my dad and Mary arrived and we had our big dinner (turkey, stuffing, roasted potatoes, carrots, scalloped potatoes, green beans, brussel sprouts, turnip). Our friend's Candice and Rachel came over for dinner, then Ken, Christina, Stacey, and Ken2 came over to help us with dessert.

I stayed until Tuesday afternoon to hang out with my dad a bit. I came back though to get all my errands done in time for the trip out to Vancouver this week-end. I have no nice clothes so I went on a bit of a shopping spree. Well, I didn't want to show up at the wedding in jeans and a t-shirt.

I can't believe we leave tomorrow, time has flown by! I'm glad I got most of my errands done yesterday as I'm giving my key to the pet sitter today and will be stuck inside until Eric gets home (won't be able to lock my door, and wont' be able to get back into the building if I do leave) so today I'm cleaning, packing, and doing some laundry.

See ya'll tomorrow at the Bourbon!
