Speaking of Raining.......

First it was the rain, then it was the brown water and boiled water notice, then it was the mountains of snow causing delays and accidents.......well now that the snow is melting we are dealing with the rain again, only this time it's inside our home!

We came home from work last night to find it was literally raining in our storage room. There was water running down all the pipes, and dripping......no not dripping, FLOWING down the walls and from the ceiling. It wasn't enough water to be a broken water pipe, but it was way more water than a regular leak and it was dripping from so many places you needed boots and an umbrella to walk through there. It was coming down the pipes and into the furnace, and dripping down into the walls and seeping into the carpets. Luckily the carpet in our suite was just a bit damp but the neighbours above us were wading through theirs.

Now wouldn't you know it our landlord is on vacation AGAIN! They are ALWAYS on vacation and so whenever anything goes wrong with our place they aren't around to deal with it. They have someone who's sort of in charge while they are away but he wasn't able to do anything for us beyond shoveling all the snow off our roof, so we had to wait until morning to get a roofer in. The storage room has a drain in the floor right under the leak so at least most of the water was draining away, but since it was running into the furnace and through the walls, it meant we had no heat, and it shorted out our phone.

By 6:00am the ceiling in our bathroom was dripping and sagging so Eric poked a small hole in it to facilitate drainage and prevent the ceiling from caving in. Lucky he had a bucket on hand as it was like someone had turned on a faucet! The stream gusing through the small hole half filled a 5 gallon bucket in 30 minutes!!

I called into work to let them know I'd be late and called around to find a roofer who could come out A.S.A.P. No one wanted to come at first without our landlord's ok, and the emergency contact guy was unreachable. Finally, armed with a copy of the lanlord/tenancy act (stating that in an emergency, if the landlord or emergency contact cannot be reached, tenants can procede with any repairs neccessary), we finally convinced someone to come out and have a look. They said they may not be able to fix the roof until the snow was gone but luckily it was just the furnce vent had rusted away leaving a big hole into which all the melting snow and ice were draining. He gave it a good caulking (Eric had a field day with that line) and the rain finally stopped!

We got some furnace guy to come look at the furnace but it was full of water so he told us he couldn't do anything until it was dried out. We called this place that specializes in restorations and repairing damages and such, and they said they could dry our walls and carpets no problem, but if the furnace was full of water we'd have to call the furnace people. We're fricking freezing in here, could SOMEONE come and fix our furnace please! I really don't care who, just come and give us back our heat already!!

We have one space heater, and Eric's parent's lent us three more, so we have those going to warm up the place and to help dry up the damp. The restoration people are coming tomorrow to survey the damage and hopefully they can dry the place up enough that the furnace people can come back and actually fix our furnace.

What next?
